The Perfect Union
Every year in the coldest weeks of the winter season, strange sculptures begin to appear in the fields all over the island. It is the moment for grafting.
Wild olive trees grow throughout the island and they produce perfectly tiny olives with a thin and bitter skin. However, though the oil from wild olives is supposedly superior to that of domesticated varieties, the yield is much, much lower. And so the grafting game begins. Heart Studio
Heart Studio is a combination of the myriad talents of couple Bruno Savona and Martina Silli. Based in Santadi, Sardinia, they have worked throughout Italy and Europe creating visual identities, illustrations, screenprinted mini-masterpieces and textiles. Since they decided to move home to the island, they have delved into ever more research and collaboration with ethnographic and local art museums. They teach courses on the symbols of the island as they relate to everything from graphic design to the decoration of bread and sweets. And, additionally, they teach a free visual arts workshop for children, introducing the local population to a wide range of techniques and approaches.
What is your favorite place in Sardinia?
Bruno: The sea cliffs at Porto Scuso…
Martina: Really??
Bruno: …I know it isn’t the most beautiful place on the island, but I grew up here. Every significant experience of my youth - every “first” - happened there. There are a thousand other coastlines in Sardinia that might be more breathtaking, wilder, but Porto Scuso is the most meaningful to me.
Martina: There are too many places I love, but if I have to name the one that means most to me it would be the mountains of Gutturu Mannu, near Pantaleo. If I had only one place to show to someone in all of Sardinia, it would be this.
